Tips and tricks to manage your detail page effectively and quickly

Updating Your Event Detail Page
Every event registration form you build automatically has a Detail Page created with it. It's common throughout the event build process that admins can get caught up with the form itself and ignore the detail page, which is understandable - I tell clients when building out your events to save the Detail Page for last, but you also don't want to forget about it completely. While you can link registrants directly to the event form and bypass the detail page, it's important to remember that if you are using the Event Listing on your home page or elsewhere on the site, the first click on the event will always take you to Detail Page, so it's crucial to at the very least have a clean, easy-to read page that is consistent across all of your events.

Building Out Your Detail Page

  1. When creating the new form, you can choose what layout to use for your Detail Page. The layouts you have are mostly unique to your site. There is a standard layout provided by default, and as we’ll cover later, you can create your own custom layouts and save those. We also provide HTML for a variety of custom layouts that will be shared later. Once you choose the layout, the drop-down option goes away, and you can change your selection through the Content Properties. You will need to manually edit the layout if it needs to be changed. Ideally, you have layouts created and saved so that you can choose from the list without needing to do any manual work later.
  1. The second step of the Content Properties will be for the Event Calendar listing text (Event Preview), and the rest can appear on the Detail Page: Event Description, Contact 1 and 2, Location and Directions. These are optional and can be edited any time. As you’ll see later, this information can be edited on the Detail Page directly.
  1. Once you create the form, click on View Content.
You’re now viewing the Detail Page. The Admin Toolbar at the top will be your primary tool for modifying the page as needed.

Form & Data

This is only really needed if you came to the detail page first and now need to get to the actual form. If you came to the page via View Content on the form, then that tab is already open for you.

Content Properties

This opens the two-step Content Properties you went through when first creating the form. You can click this to edit the form name, date, range, attendee count, etc. You also can update the Detail Page content, contact and location information, but you update directly on the page via the View Mode Tool.

View Mode

View Mode provides the opportunity to view the page as it appears to users (minus the toolbar). This is the default setting, but you can select two other options to edit the page: Inline Edit and Layout Edit.

Inline Edit

This allows you to edit the text, the same as if you were going through the second step of Content Properties. Select this option then click wherever you see a pencil icon. You can edit the Event Description, Location, Contact 1 and 2 and Directions, if applicable.
*Note: When you click the green save icon in the module window, don’t forget to click Save on the tool bar to save the changes. Failing to do so and leaving the page will revert the page. This is a nice option though if you want to see how the page looks before committing to the change. If you don’t like what you’ve done you can just refresh the page.

Layout Edit

This option should be used to adjust the layout/structure of the page, NOT to add text or images – a common mistake. While you can add text and images, this mode is meant to reflect the layout html and allow you edit those pieces as needed. You can use this to remove sections (you don’t want to display Contacts or Directions), or re-order pieces in the layout. For example, you may want to put all your contact, directions and location information into the Event Description, so you may want to go into the Layout Edit and delete those tokens. Ideally, you may go into the Layout Edit to add a new layout, tweak the pieces, save, and be done. You’ll be able to save the layout, name it, and apply it to future detail pages.

Updating the Layout

Once you have clicked on Layout Edit, hover your cursor just above the title of the form on the page. This will highlight the whole page in green and click. This opens an editor that will display the token pieces pulling in your data, along with header/title verbiage for different sections. You can move or remove pieces you don’t want.
*Note: Recommended to click HTML Mode in the left corner to modify your layout. Encompass has a variety of mobile-friendly templates you can apply to your page. These are located on the Support site and can be accessed any time. Copy the HTML, go into the editor (in HTML mode), and paste the code in. Modify the layout as desired, then save the content. *Note: Click Save Changes in toolbar before leaving the page to finalize the updates.
The Support site also has documentation on updating outdated layouts with the mobile templates provided.
If you’d like to save the layout as a template to use for future forms, click Reuse Layout and name the layout in a manner that is clear to any admins using the system what the layout is for.
*Note: If you would like a new layout you created to be the “default”, understand that saved layouts will be listed alphabetically in the Event Detail Page dropdown list when creating a new event. Whatever is listed first is the “default” if you don’t select, so consider using an icon like _ or * that will place your new layout at the top. Otherwise, remember to select the layout before moving past the first step of your Content Properties

Event Detail Pages and Activities Display

By default, most layouts have an activities token included. This will list any activities created for your event in alphabetical order, including date and time. While this can be nice, I highly recommend removing this token. If you leave the list, each activity name has a link that will take you to ANOTHER detail page just for the activity, which means you have decided if you want to edit/update what is on each of those activity pages. It’s not best practice to have registrants clicking away your main page just to read about each activity. My recommendation:
  1. Remove the [[Activity List]] token from the layout
  1. If you want to provide a list of the activities, add it into Event Description. If you have any other pages created promoting the event (About, FAQ, Directions, Hotels, etc.), consider providing greater activity details here, rather than on the Detail Page itself.

*Detail Pages for Giving

Most clients don’t use the Detail Page for giving forms, typically because there already exists plenty of information about the campaign on existing pages or other sites, and the goal is to get donors to the form as quickly and easily as possible. If you are going to use the detail page, Encompass has a mobile-friendly layout if what you have currently is not up-to-date.
Happy Event Building!
